Furbish Thrift To Host Big Ass-tronomical Pet Adoption Bonanza

05.2026

Furbish Thrift is hosting what may be the largest animal adoption event ever held in central Virginia. Hundreds of cats and dogs will be available for potential adopters from 11 till 3 on June 13 at the Richmond Raceway.  All animals will have been spayed/neutered, healthy, and friendly with other animals and children.

“Thus far, we have invited over 30 animal shelters from around the Commonwealth to support this project,” said Laura Cotterman, chair of the William A. Harrison, Jr. Foundation. A program of the foundation, Furbish Thrift, is a Richmond nonprofit that has donated nearly $500,000 to animal nonprofits in the last three years.

“We are connecting with animal organizations to place as many pets in homes as we can.” Laura said. “Shelters often face over-crowding and through this united effort we cannot only clear shelter space, but place healthy, loving animals with families who appreciate the companionship that only a pet can provide.”

Participating thus far are the Henrico Humane Society, Richmond Animal Care and Control, SPCA, Richmond Animal League and shelters from Petersburg and Sussex County. Organizers are also reaching out to Southwest Virginia shelters.
