Cardinal Wilton Gregory Will Speak At First Annual Neumann Gala

His Eminence Cardinal Wilton Gregory, Archbishop Emeritus of Washington, will be the keynote speaker at the Saint John Neumann Foundation’s first annual gala, which will be held from 6 pm till 10 pm on November 14 at Virginia Union University. Funds raised from this event will go toward a permanent museum honoring the Black Catholic experience in the Diocese of Richmond. 

Elevated to the College of Cardinals by Pope Francis in 2020, Cardinal Gregory became the first African American cardinal of the Catholic Church, and remains the only one to date. A former president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops and Archbishop of Atlanta before Washington, Cardinal Gregory has spent decades writing and speaking on the intersection of faith and racial justice. In 2025 he became the first African American to participate in a papal conclave.
