NORTH of the JAMES 2024: Virginia Press Association Awards
04.2025
NORTH OF THE JAMES magazine won multiple awards for writing and photography from the Virginia Press Association at this year’s conference held earlier this month.
Jack R. Johnson was recognized for three of his Hidden Histories columns—Richmond Community Hospital: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly; The Battle of New Market Heights; and The Greensboro Massacre. Here’s what the judges said of Jack’s writing: “Great columns in calling attention to an area's history that also is part of American history. These were packed with so much detail. I had to read them twice to try and absorb it all. Excellent work by Jack Johnson!”
Charles McGuigan won two separate awards for feature story writing. Here’s what the judges had to say about Ending Homelessness With Patricia Gould-Champ And Allison Bodanovic: “An inspired story beautifully told of two who united and cared enough to make their goals realized. Fine piece of work that demonstrated terrific reporting and beautiful writing.”; and Melissa Vaughn at the Helm of WRIR: “A compelling story that benefited from great reporting and lively writing. Any editor would be proud to have this writer on staff.”
Rebecca D’Angelo won two awards for her cover photographs of Andrew Alli and Mike Lucas.
NORTH OF THE JAMES wishes to congratulate all journalists, photographers and designers across the Commonwealth who were also recognized for their hard work, and commitment to a free press in an era when certain politicians routinely attack the Fourth Estate.
